What is a crew cab vs regular cab vs double cab?
These days trucks are everywhere. The times when pickups were used only for work are long gone. Modern pickups can be outfitted to be as opulent as the most iconic brands from Germany. So, it doesn’t matter if you require a workhorse or want the lap of luxury, there is a pickup out there for you. After deciding if you need 4WD (or just Rear-Wheel Drive), the next big decision is to figure out which cab type works best for you.
As the name implies, a regular cab pickup truck has only one row of seating with limited storage space and legroom. A regular cab pickup used to be the only configuration available on pickups. In nearly all regular cab pickup trucks, the seatbacks almost touch the rear of the cab. This model is the utilitarian version of a truck and is normally found with manual windows and locks. A regular cab is a work truck, not to haul family and friends around.
As you might expect, an Extended Cab pickup truck (can also be called a Double Cab pickup truck) is basically a Regular Cab with more area behind the front seating. When it was first introduced, extended cab pickups were only sold as 2-door models and had small rear jump seats available. Now sometimes known as a Double Cab pickup, these trucks now have a second row of small doors for access to the cargo area. While there are 2 rows of seats, an Extended Cab pickup wouldn’t be the ideal vehicle for long trips, even if it can haul more people.
While not as apparent as the previous versions, a Crew Cab truck features four full-size doors and the space to hold, well, your whole ‘crew.’ Crew Cab pickup trucks are designed to carry more stuff and-or passengers. For some people, these kinds of trucks have become the family vehicle. A Crew Cab pickup’s more powerful engine options and larger size are not seen in the sedan world while still providing the luxuries and rear-seat legroom that families desire.
